Sewing and a Giveaway..(Added, a carrier bag dispenser Tutorial in photos)

I plan to make a couple of carrier bag dispensers this morning.Also a school bag as a surprise for my youngest. I plan to use an old yellow gingham curtain for the dispensers and some lovely cath kidston fabrics,probably in patchwork for the school bag, will decide when I gather the fabrics together.

I will be back with some photos when I've finished. As I am typing I have had an idea for a giveaway.

I now have 25 lovely followers and if I can get up to 50 then I will have a giveaway definately.  One of the items will be a carrier bag dispenser, fabric yet to be decided but it will be pretty, and I will have to have a think about one or two other items.

I decided on some blue gingham fabric I found in my stash which was left over from when I made my daughters' summer school dresses and matching sun hats.

I am making two bags so I cut two pieces roughly 19 inches square.
Folded in half right sides together, I sewed it about 1/4 inch in from the edge then I zig zagged stitched the edge (I could have just overlocked it together but couldn't be bothered to lug it out from the back of the cupboard.

I found some white ric rac in my box and turned over a small hem top and bottom and sewed on the ric rac overlapping the ends for a neater finish and so that it doesn't fray.

Then I cut 2 pieces of fabric 2 inches wide by about 8 and 1/2 inches long. This is for the hanging loop.
I should have ironed this but I couldn't be bothered to lug the iron and ironing board out.
I folded it in half lengthwise then tucked the edges inside and sewed this together right side out.

Then I zig zagged it down on the inside on the hem.

I got some narrow elastic about a 1/4 inch wide and cut 2 pieces approx 7 and 9 inches long.
The longer piece I stitched on the inside of the bag about 1 inch from the top, stretching the elastic as I went along so that it would fit. Don't forget if you want to try this it's best to overlap the elastic so that it is secure, neat, and doesn't fray. That is the tricky bit.

The shorter piece of elastic was sewn about an inch up from the bottom hem and that was even tricker as I had to stretch it even more.

Here it is turned inside out and already filled with carrier bags.



I made 2 like I said as we have quite a lot of carriers. I will have to make my daughter's bag tomorrow I think because I can't find the right thread.

Sewing to make a henrietta hoover bag re-usable and original tasting fast baked potatoes for dinner tonight.



Above are photos of the henrietta hoover bags which I cut open at the bottom, and sewed some velcro on so that we can open, empty and re-use the bag. It's going to save me money buying new bags, although we've be re-using them so far by pulling the rubbish out of the hole but thats disgusting and dusty making us sneeze so I decided to put the velcro on. Couldn't bear to pay out for new bags and these can be washed aswell.

For dinner tonight it's baked potato done in the microwave, then finished off high temp in cooker for about 10 minutes to crisp up the skin. This makes it taste like it was in the cooker the whole time but is quicker.
We will top ours with homemade butter and some grated cheese.

My Wormery Is Finished. And Stir Fry courtesy of App Fds.

Below is a photo of my wormery after I had added the worms.  I more or less followed the you tube video (link on my previous post) but I drilled a few tiny holes in the bottom of the box aswell. The lid is a little split so I didn't bother with holes in the top, I shall see how it goes.  I put plenty of strips of newspaper down first (apparently worms like this), then a layer of compost sprinkled with water just to dampen it. Then I tipped the worms in that I bought from a fishing tackle supplier the other side of  town.  They are called dendras I think.


Then I spread the kitchen scraps on top of them:


I put the lid on and left it next to the greenhouse. I will check it daily when I add more scraps to make sure it doesn't dry out. I will probably have to find a more shady spot as the weather warms up so that the worms don't shrivel up in the heat.

I didn't add a layer of sand as he advised on the video as I couldn't find it but when I do I will put some in.

Dinner tonight (and last night was stir fry noodles with the sharwoods szechuan pepper and tomato sauce from app foods delivery I had yesterday, brilliant, will deff order from them again. Will post photos of some of the items I got from them next post if camera working still as it's playing up still.

Been up since 4 am so will say cheerio for now.

Building a Wormery.

I have a plastic under the bed storage box spare from clearing out the kids old broken toys so I'm going to use that.

P.S. had an email from approved foods this morning telling me to expect my delivery between 2.25 - 3.25 this afternoon and I feel like a kid at christmas, (mad lol) .

Oops, burnt cake and Birds of Feather show

This is the lemon drizzle cake ready to go into the oven:

Unfortunately I made a mistake with the heat setting and it turned into this sorry sight:

But I managed to cut the burnt layer off and the gannets that live in my house ate it.


I forgot to say on my previous post that 2 of the photos I put up were of my seed sprouter. The cress on the top layer we had with boiled eggs in sandwiches for lunch today.

Last week (on Wednesday) I drove to Southend on sea in Essex to the Cliffs Pavilion Theatre with my eldest, to see Birds of a Feather with Linda Robson, Pauline Quirke and Lesley Joseph.  It was excellent, just as good as the shows used to be on the television.  I noticed a good couple of times when the cast were corpsing (laughing) because of the jokes they were coming out with. So funny. We had seats in the balcony, it's a lovely theatre.  They are performing the play on tour around the country until about june but I think it is nearly all sold out.  I know we found it difficult to get 2 tickets.  If you like the original series, you will probably like this. Unfortunately my camera was playing up but I managed to record snippets of it. 

Oh well, I've been up since 4.15 am Monday so a bit tired now lol so I will say goodnight.

Jam! and sprouting seeds.

Here's a pic of my first homemade jam.
In a previous post I mentioned that I had just aquired a Maslin pan and this is the first time I have managed to use it.

It's Apple and Plum using the recipe on the box that the Maslin pan came in.

Recipe

750 g    Apples  peeled and cored
750 g    Plums
450 ml  Water
1.5 kg    Sugar
1    tsp   Salt

Wash plums and place in the Maslin pan with the apples and water.
Cook the fruit slowly until the skins of the plums are softened.
Add the sugar, stir over low heat until dissolved, bring to the boil and boil rapidly until setting point is reached.
Remove the stones as they rise to the surface, ( I think it's best to do this before cooking myself).
Remove from the heat, skim (I didn't), pot, cover and label.
Upon typing this I realise I didn't use the salt as it doesn't mention when to add this so I forgot.
I got 6 and a half varying sized jars out of it.

My youngest was chomping at the bit to taste this on some crusty bread she had ready but I did manage to make her wait until it was cooled down a bit :)
Her verdict: tasty.
That's the first time I have made jam in decades and I'm quite proud of it.



I recently found this lovely classic mixer in A£di for £34 so I'm going to make a Lemon drizzle cake today (like frugal queen and frugal wife in fife.)

I've already used it to make butter and it's great. That reminds me I need to make some more butter.

Approved Foods First Order.

Hello all.

I've finally taken the plunge and put in an order with approved foods.  Don't know how long it will take to arrive, does anyone know?

Also took delivery of a 3 tier Seed Sprouter a week or so ago and have some sprouts just about ready to harvest. Will post pics tomorrow hopefully.

Went with my eldest to see a show in Southend on sea last wednesday, will tell more tomorrow.

Look At These Babies.

Thanks for the get well comments.  I haven't been well, so haven't been doing much to blog about but thought I'd pop on a photo of my new buys which arrived by post yesterday. 

I got a Jam Funnel, a Strainer and Maslin Pan (all stainless steel) for £38 which I found very reasonable and it only took 2 days to arrive.

I can't wait to get started.

I also recently bought a plastic greenhouse which I got on offer at £34.  Off to take a photo of that and to plant some seeds.  Will post photos soon.
